I Am Really Sorry My Son…
Published Date: 1st January 2017
It was early Saturday morning; I woke my son up for the Skates class. He got up super quick to get ready for his skate class. We reached the venue by 7.00 am. He did pretty well for 20 to 30 minutes and then suddenly he wanted to take a break. It had barely been few minutes after the break after which he simply refused to skate. This became an every weekend story. To be honest it left me puzzled. I couldn’t understand what the issue was? All kind of scenarios played in my head. Different questions kept popping in my head after that, like... if he was unwell? If he was giving an excuse? If he disliked skating?
I checked his body weight; it was all perfect as per his age. Then I decided to consult his pediatrician. She mentioned there was nothing to worry as he was an active child full of energy, her words made me a sense of relief but the problem was still there. She asked me “whether he eats properly?” I was thinking, what is the meaning of properly? I give him a good mix of diet consisting of fruits, protein, carbs to the best of my knowledge, I proudly said “yes’. She prescribed some blood tests for him. And I was shocked with the results. He was deficient of Vitamin D and Iron. All my pride had gone. Iron deficiency was leading to insufficient oxygen reaching to all parts of the body which was making my kid tired.
I felt guilty for thinking he was being lazy and did not want to work hard. I am really sorry, instead of understanding your problem, I was pushing you to get up and practice. I am really sorry for blaming you.
But I had few questions in my mind, is his weight correct? He is a playful child. How is he nutrient deficient? I started reading more about child nutrition to get my answers.
Being constantly active helps toddlers develop muscles, bones and coordination. It is his nature to be active though body weight plays a little role in it too. If children find it difficulty in consuming 1,000 to 1,400 calories that they need for daily activities their weight will start reducing but they still can be active. But nutrition is right combination of various building blocks of our body, so weight is mere an addition of calories but nutrition is much more than that. A child body need different nutrient for growing body like DHA for brain development. We mothers are more worried about kid’s weights but right food containing the entire nutrient is also important for right foundation.
With all that information, again I met his doctor. She said, “yes, growing child needs are different from adults so their food should also be different”.
Fostering good eating habits and providing healthy, nutrient-dense food choices is one of a parent's important tasks in raising young children. Quality nutrition is important for toddlers, because it affects physical and mental development as well as helping to prevent and overcome illness.
Now the mothers have a big challenge, since their nutritional needs are more but their taste buds are not so developed so they mostly refuse to eat healthy food. A study says a child needs to eat a food 6 to 15 times to really get acceptance of that food. So Mums keep trying broccoli or avocado till they like, do not give up. But we cannot wait till they start liking healthy food. Even health drinks could be a good start. So for fussy eaters, health drinks with nutrients like DHA, protein and vitamins is a good option. Go out and check the various options available, but be very sure of which brand you pick! After trying various brands, my kiddo finally settled for Junior Horlicks and so far it has helped us with the transition!
